Your merchant account

A merchant account is a regulated financial account issued by an authorised member of Visa and MasterCard (the “card schemes”). You need one to accept card payments.

Your merchant account identifies you as a card acceptor on the scheme networks and is the collection point where your funds are settled before being paid out to your bank account.

The underwriting process

Merchant account providers (or “acquirers”) are financial institutions and must comply with scheme rules and financial regulations. They will always verify the key facts about your business and its principals to satisfy their legal requirements.

Each acquirer must perform due diligence to make sure that:

  • Your business conforms to their risk policy
  • Your website and business practices comply with scheme rules
  • Your company structure is acceptable
  • Directors and UBOs are identified and are not problematic.
